Portrait: Cock o' The North
I'm really delighted to have sold this portrait - Cock o' The North, painted about 2 years ago - size: 91.5cm x 76cm. Acrylic on canvas, painted partly from life during a 2 hour sitting - mostly working on the face - and subsequently completed in the studio from photographic reference. The initial stage after about 2 hours is on the right. It's always interesting to see what's gained and what's lost during the process towards completion - there's always going to be a compromise and some things you wish you'd left alone, or different paths you might have taken. I really am inclined to wonder if it's a good idea to record the process at intermediate stages at all!
The painting, of Whitby poet and improvising musician, Tony Morris, a vocalist who performs his own brand of vernacular songs and music, is part of a challenging series of large portraits I've been working on for the last 2 years. I currently have 4 stacked unfinished waiting for attention...
